In the new National Defense Authorization Act [NDAA] for 2014, members of the U.S. Congress have inserted a provision that would prevent Turkey from proceeding with its September 2013 decision to buy a complete missile defense system made by a Chinese state-owned company.
The firm, China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp. is still under embargo by the U.S. for violation of missile proliferation regimes.
The NDAA under legislative consideration puts a condition on the Turkey decision: if Turkey, a NATO member state, proceeds with the Chinese missile deal, worth $3.4 billion, the U.S. Congress will ban the use of U.S. money to integrate the Chinese missile system, known as the HQ-9, with the U.S. or NATO systems.
