Caught off guard by developments in Ukraine, Beijing could lose big

While President and commander-in-chief Xi Jinping is generally credited with boosting China’s global profile, chinks in the armor of China’s aggressive foreign policy have also become obvious.

Supremo Xi was so wrapped up with the “strategic partnership” he put together with the disgraced president Viktor Yanukovych that he and his advisers were caught off guard by the dramatic developments in Kiev the past few months.

Believing that the Russia-backed Yanukovych could easily put down pro-European protestors, Chinese officials made no efforts to get to know leaders of the opposition in the restive country.

Last December, Xi rolled out the red carpet in Beijing for Yanukovych. The two leaders pledged to “further deepen the strategic partnership relations” between the two former Communist countries.

Kiev promised to sell more sophisticated weapons — including those developed with the help of the Russians — to China.
