“I am pleased to announce that this morning, our government received confirmation from the government of Kuwait to allow Canada to use their facilities for our operations in Iraq,” Canadian Defence Minister Rob Nicholson said.
Canada marked the second NATO ally reported to have expanded deployment in Kuwait. Earlier, the United States said it was sending more than 2,000 soldiers as part of a rapid-deployment force in the Middle East and Gulf.
In a statement on Oct. 9, Nicholson said Canada was conducting reconnaissance missions over ISIL strongholds in Iraq and Syria. The minister said his country was also providing humanitarian aid to those threatened by the Islamist movement.
“Our CAF [Canadian armed forces] reconnaissance team continues to do tremendous work in arranging the logistical details to support our mission and the government looks forward to sharing more information as it becomes finalized,” Nicholson said.
