Canada firm reports new oil finds in Kurdistan

LONDON — The Kurdish Regional Government has overseen an increase in
crude oil discoveries.

A Canadian company has reported two oil-bearing zones in northern Iraq.
ShaMaran Petroleum, which has already reported two other discoveries, said
the latest deposits were located in the Pulkhana-9 appraisal well.

ShaMaran said it conducted six tests after drilling 2,333 meters.

Executives said oil was recovered in four reservoirs and plans to drill yet
another appraisal well.

KRG has been recruiting European and Canadian companies for energy
exploration in an effort that has angered the central government in Baghdad.

Unlike most in the Middle East, KRG has not insisted on holding a
majority stake in crude oil or natural gas projects.
