CAIRO — After a lull of nearly two years, Al Qaida has resumed large-scale attacks in Yemen.

The military has acknowledged an assault by Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula on facilities in southern Yemen.

“There will be a strong and decisive action against the terrorists,” Yemen’s Supreme Security Committee said.

Officials said the attacks were the bloodiest since the end of a lull in major AQAP operations in mid-2013. They said AQAP, despite U.S. air strikes, has reorganized forces in the south and east of Yemen.

One of the attacks on Sept. 20 consisted of a suicide car bombing in a
Yemen Army outpost in Mayfa. The base was assigned to support protection of
Yemen’s crude oil infrastructure, including wells and a pipeline.

Officials said AQAP fighters also captured army vehicles. They said the
vehicles would probably be used in future suicide bombings on Army and
police bases.

AQAP was said to have launched a campaign to gain control over much of
Yemen’s coast. Officials acknowledged that the network rebuilt its presence
in at least four provinces — Abyan, Hadramaut, Jouf and Shabwa.
