The Chinese Communist Party leadership is set to use dollar diplomacy to prevent the Yangon (Rangoon) regime from falling into the embrace of the United States.

Beijing’s uneasiness toward the liberalization policies of Burma’s President Thein Sein has been reflected in its low-key reaction to the landslide victory that Aung San Suu Kyi’s National Democratic League (NDL) Party won in just-concluded parliamentary elections.

While the results of the elections were reported in the state media, Chinese officials and government-affiliated scholars and commentators were unusually reticent about the apparent significance of the rise of power in the isolated regime.

Chinese diplomatic analysts said the CCP leadership was fearful that should Yangon follow its current path of political reform, Beijing might think twice about maintaining its long-standing relationship with Burma.
