Beijing makes a point of delivering pointed remarks to the visiting Chuck Hagel

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s visit to Beijing will be remembered as the first time that People’s Liberation Army generals publicly lectured a top official of the United States.

Responding to remarks made by Hagel earlier this week about the U.S. standing by Japan and other Asian allies against China’s increasingly assertive sovereignty claims in the East China and the South China Sea, Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission Fan Changlong said the Chinese side was dissatisfied.

Gen. Fan, who is also a member of the ruling Politburo, told Hagel: “I can tell you frankly, your remarks made in the ASEAN defence ministers meeting and to Japanese politicians were tough, and had a clear purpose.

“The Chinese people, including myself, are dissatisfied with such remarks.”
