Attacks on Egypt’s gas pipeline cost Israel $4 billion

TEL AVIV — Israel has reported $4 billion in losses from the
repeated bombings of Egypt’s natural gas pipeline.

Officials said the Finance Ministry has determined that at least 13
bombings of Egypt’s Arab Gas Pipeline cost the Israeli economy at least $4
billion. They said the government was forced to enable a sharp rise in fuel
costs to ensure electricity generation.

“Most of the money was spent to purchase fuel from other sources,” an
official said.

On March 14, Finance Ministry director-general Doron Cohen said Israel
was also losing from the depletion from its Mary-2 field. Cohen said the
ministry allocated $800 million to the state-owned Israel Electric Corp. to
purchase fuel and gas oil to replace the Egyptian gas.
