Asia pivot: U.S. plan to close 15 bases in Europe noted in Moscow

In a major move to further reduce U.S. military presence in Europe and implement the shift of strategic weight toward Asia, the Pentagon has announced the closing of at least 15 long-standing U.S. military bases across Europe.

The base-closings impact America’s major allies in Europe, including Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy, in addition to some offshore islands in the Atlantic such as the Azores.

There are about 60,000 U.S. troops stationed in Europe at present. Even with the base closings, the current number of troops will stay the same, according to the Pentagon, although defense analysts believe that number will most likely dwindle.
