As N. Korea steps up plutonium production, U.S. gears exercises to increasing nuclear threat

SEOUL — North Korea is set to produce 6-8 kilograms of plutonium that can make one more bomb from the nuclear reactor at the Yongbyon complex it has restarted last year, a government source here said.

“Judging from its recent activities, North Korea could extract spent fuel rods as early as September or no later than the end of this year,” the source said.

“If the spent fuel rods were reprocessed, they can be used to produce an additional 6-8 kilograms of plutonium,” the source said.

Satellite images showed white steam rising from a building near the hall that houses the plutonium production reactor’s steam turbines and electric generators, an indication the reactor has been in operation.
