Arctic war of words heats up as Russia, Canada press their claims

Canada is the most enthusiastic pusher for harsh sanctions against Russia’s aggressions in Ukraine and there is a particular reason for that:

Canada and Russia are engaged in a tense territorial dispute of their own, albeit in the frigid Arctic region.

Canada and Russia both claim a huge Arctic region not yet demarcated as the natural extension of their respective continental shelves.

Although the five members of the Arctic Council that have Arctic territories have yet to reach an agreement on boundaries, Russia and Canada are the most ambitious in pushing their claims.

Sensing Canada’s unyielding claim, Putin in July sent Russian heavy bombers to fly over the disputed Arctic region to annoy the Canadians.
