Al Qaida’s Syria beachhead forces Israel to finally see it as threat

WASHINGTON — At a seminar, former CIA deputy director Michael Morell said Egypt was struggling to eliminate Al Qaida from Sinai.

In an address to the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Morell, who retired from the agency in 2013, said Al Qaida was spreading throughout the Middle East and for the first time posed a threat to Israel.

“The organization has long been interested in establishing a presence in the Levant but has had a difficult time doing so until now,” Morell said.

“A strong presence in Syria means that for the first time, Israel will need to think about Al Qaida as a significant threat to its territory.” Meanwhile, Ansar Beit Maqdis has recruited thousands of fighters in Egypt.
