Al Qaida’s Nusra Front has confimed the death of “military commander” Abu Hommam al-Shami by an air strike on March 5.
Other Nusra Front leaders were reported killed as well and the fate of top leader Abu Mohammad al-Golani was not known, according to a Syrian state news agency and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Syria claimed credit for the strikes which Al Qaida claimed were conducted by U.S. coalition forces. Both Syria and the U.S. coalition regularly target Nusra Front positions.
The Nusra Front is fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant for control of northern Syria and recently absorbed the U.S.-backed Hazm group.
