A Moroccan court has sentenced Adil Al Atmani to die after being
convicted of planning a bombing in Marrakesh in which 17 people, most of
them European nationals, were killed. Al Atmani was sentenced by a security
court in Sale on Oct. 28.

The court also sentenced a convicted accomplice of Al Atmani, identified
as Hakim Dah, to life in prison. The two men, said to be linked to Al Qaida,
smuggled a bomb detonated by a cellphone in a crowded tourist cafe in April.

The bombing operation was said to have included another seven people.
The court sentenced four of them to four years while three others were given
three years. Prosecutors said they plan to appeal these sentences.

The defense had asked for a life sentence for Al Atmani, who first
confessed and then retracted. Morocco has not carried out an execution since
1992.

Al Atmani was charged with forging links to Al Qaida Organization in the
Islamic Maghreb. During the trial, he reported visits to such regional
states as Algeria, Libya, Mali and Mauritania.
