NICOSIA — Iran has restored efforts for Western development of its largest natural gas field.

south pars1_550x300Officials said the Iranian Oil Ministry was wooing Western energy majors to return to South Pars, the world’s largest gas field.

They said the Iranian nuclear agreement signed with P5+1 has sparked renewed interest by Western contractors for the multi-billion-dollar project, which now produces 290 million cubic meters of gas per day.

“The priority is to see whether those that had been working at South Pars would agree to return,” an official said.

Until 2011, France’s Total, Royal Dutch Shell and Spain’s Repson were
contracted to develop South Pars, which also includes a refinery. Officials
said the ministry would also seek to complete Phase 12, meant to produce 81
million cubic meters of gas per day.
