Egyptian President Abdul Fatah Sisi visited Saudi Arabia on May 2, following the major shakeup in the Kingdom’s leadership and amid reports of Saudi and Iranian forces joining opposite sides of the fighting in Yemen.

A statement by Egypt’s ambassador said Sisi’s visit of ‘less than two hours, focused on the restive regional scene, mainly Yemen, Syria and Iraq,” Arab News quoted Affifi Ahmed Abdelwahab as saying.

Sisi also wanted to take the measure of the new Saudi leadership under King Salman, officials suggested.

Former crown prince, Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz, who had not only been in line for succession but had also served as the primary contact for Egyptian relations, was replaced by Interior Minister Mohammed bin Nayef. In addition, King Salman appointed his son, Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman, as deputy crown prince on April 29.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian army crackdown on militant Islamists aligned with Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, Al Qaida and Muslim Brotherhood killed 29 insurgents in northern Sinai in the last 10 days of April, an official said.

Egyptian forces destroyed 51 outposts and arrested 27 wanted persons, along with 106 other suspects.
