About 20,000 Hamas civil servants walked off the job in protest of the suspension of salaries in wake of a reconciliation agreement with the rival Fatah movement. Most of the walkouts were of members of the police and security forces.

“They were part of the security forces,” a Palestinian source said.

The strike, which began on Nov. 4, prompted a government shutdown throughout the Gaza Strip. Schools, however, remained operating.

Hamas has demanded that the Palestinian Authority continue the salaries of more than 40,000 civil servants. On Oct. 29, the PA relayed salaries to 24,000 Hamas members responsible for government operations.

But the PA has failed to pay Hamas’ military and security forces. The sources said they comprised 16,000 people, many of whom fought in the 50-day war against Israel in July and August 2014.

“They are armed and angry,” the source said.
