CAIRO Ñ The Sudanese regime said it foiled a rebel attempt to blow
up the nation's key oil pipeline.
The Khartoum-based Al Anba daily said Sudan's military foiled an attempt
to blow up the 1,500-kilometer pipeline at a point near the city of Sankat,
500 kilometers northeast of Khartoum. The newspaper said a military patrol
on Wednesday night found mines and bombs around the pipe.
The bombing was foiled, the newspaper said. The attempt was attributed
to the opposition National Democratic Alliance. The group did not issue any
statement.
A Sudanese Interior Ministry statement, which also reported the bombing
attempt, said government troops found leaflets by the rebel Sudanese
People's Liberation Army
near the pipeline.
Earlier this month, the SPLA announced attacks on oil facilities in the
south and east of Sudan in the area of Heglig. The oil pipeline targeted
runs from Heglig to the Red Sea for export.
On Friday, the SPLA announced that its forces captured two Sudanese
military positions on Mount Nuba earlier this month. The government had
previously announced that the military foiled such an attack.
