TEL AVIV — Israel has confirmed a major natural gas reserve in what could lead the Jewish state to energy independence.

The Israeli Infrastructure Ministry said the Leviathan field contains at least 16 trillion cubic feet of gas, by far the largest energy find in the Jewish state, Middle East Newsline reported.

Officials said this could significantly reduce Israel's energy imports, particularly for electricity generation.

"This is the most important energy news since the founding of the state," Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau said. "If it acts correctly, level-headedly and responsibly, Israel can enjoy not only the benefit of using the gas, but it can also turn into a gas supplier in the Mediterranean region."

Leviathan was discovered by a consortium led by the U.S. firm Noble Energy. Noble and its Israeli partners have been lobbying against efforts to increase taxes on energy revenues.
