Officials said the regime of President Bashar Assad has determined a gas field in Homs, a stronghold of the Sunni revolt. They said the Oil Ministry would seek an international partner to develop the field in Qalamun, which has already undergone drilling.

"The first wells were drilled at Qara in Homs governorate and the flow rate is 400,000 cubic meters per day." Syrian Oil Minister Sufian Alawi said.

The United States has imposed sanctions on Syria's energy sector. The European Union has been under pressure to follow Washington in boycotting Syrian energy.
