Officials said the Gulf Cooperation Council kingdom decided to halt plans to procure gas from Iran in wake of the Shi'ite revolt. They said Iran played a major role in aiding the Shi'ite opposition with money and weapons.

"The project to import Iranian gas is currently halted because of the blatant Iranian interference," Bahraini Foreign Minister Khaled Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said.

In 2008, Bahrain signed a memorandum of understanding for the import of one billion cubic feet of gas per day from Iran, Middle East Newsline reported.

Iran has been a major trading partner with Bahrain, which contains a majority of Shi'ites, many of them Iranian nationals.
