Western oil majors hope for early return to Libya

LONDON — Western energy firms are quietly seeking to return to Libya.

Several companies have already begun preparing for a return of their staff to Libya amid expectations that the NATO mission against the North African country would soon end. So far, at least four Western majors have been discussing details with the Libyan National Oil Corp.

"We have contracts that are valid and we intend to resume them," an executive said.

Austria's OMV, Royal Dutch Shell, Italy's Eni and Britain's BP have been working with Libya for the resumption of operations. Eni has called on the European Union to suspend sanction on Libya, imposed during the revolt against the regime of Libyan Col. Moammar Gadhafi.
