Harsh winter, price subsidies make for natural gas roller coaster in Iran

NICOSIA — Iran, strapped for energy, has reported record-high natural gas consumption.

The National Iranian Gas Co. cited winter conditions for the record gas consumption. The company said consumption reached 530 million cubic meters per day in January, Middle East Newsline reported.

Iran has been importing gas from suppliers in neighboring Central Asian countries.

Officials said gas consumption decreased by more than 20 million cubic meters a day since the government lifted price subsidies.

Teheran has reported gas production of 600 million cubic meters a day.
