Security sources said a large bomb was found in the northern Sinai capital of El Arish on Sept. 1. They said the bomb, found in a black bag, along a coastal highway, was neutralized by sappers.

"It was an artillery shell that was wired to detonate," a security source said.

This marked the first bombing plot reported in Sinai in more than a week and came during Operation Eagle. The operation by some 3,000 soldiers and police officers was meant to capture Al Qaida-aligned and other insurgents in Sinai.

The sources said security forces have been on alert for attacks in the El Arish area, a leading smuggling route to the Gaza Strip. They said military and police units were ordered along major roads in the northern Sinai.
