Egyptian intelligence spotted subversion effort by Iran in 2009
Egyptian intelligence identified Iranian support for Muslim subversion in Egypt in 2009 and identified proxies for Teheran as Hizbullah and Hamas, according to Egypt's director of intelligence.
Egyptian General Intelligence Service (EGIS) Chief Omar Suleiman, who later became vice president under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, told U.S. Central Command leader Gen. David Petraeus during a visit to Cairo that Iran also is backing Egyptian extremist groups like Jamaatt al-Islamiyya and the Muslim Brotherhood.
