Morocco plans to export solar energy to Europe

CAIRO — Morocco has launched an effort to export solar power.

Morocco has signed a cooperation agreement with Desertec Industrial Initiative to facilitate solar energy exports to Europe.

Under the agreement, Desertec would help Morocco construct its first solar plant, meant to generate 125 megawatts of electricity.

"Ultimately it depends on the Moroccan side and Masen as to whether there's a connection with us and their solar plan," Desertec said.

Under the plan, the North African kingdom, through the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy, would produce two gigawatts of solar energy by 2020. Four companies were expected to bid to construct the first solar plant.
