The gigabit interface converters sold by Ashoor's company, CDS Federal,
for $119,000 were meant for Marine deployment in Iraq. Officials said the
equipment, bought in China for less than five percent of the price quoted to
the Defense Department, was to have been installed in a data network at the
Marine base in Taqadum.
Officials said the counterfeit converters were detected by U.S. Customs
and Border Protection officers.
"Trafficking in counterfeit computer components is a problem that spans
the globe and impacts most, if not all, major network equipment
manufacturers," Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer said on May 6.
Judge David Hittner, who handed down the sentence, said Ashoor should be
deported to Saudi Arabia. Ashoor was said to have lived with his wife and
children in the United States for 20 years.
"See that he is deported," Hittner said.
