Iran-backed Shi'ites attack homes of Yemenis thought to have aided military

CAIRO — Iranian-backed Shi'ite rebels were said to have launched an abduction campaign in Yemen.

Officials said fighters from the Believing Youth movement were raiding homes in northern Yemen and kidnapping occupants. They said the targets were those believed to have helped the Yemeni military in its five-month war with the Shi'ite rebels, led by Abdul Malek Al Houthi. A ceasefire in the conflict was announced in mid-February, Middle East Newsline reported.

"The only thing that Al Houthi rebels have done so far is re-opening some roads and remove some mines," the Yemeni Security Commission said.

The commission, which has been monitoring the two-week-old ceasefire, said the Believing Youth has failed to honor the six conditions set by the regime of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The panel said the Shi'ite rebels have refused to withdraw from their positions, and instead were plundering homes in the northern province of Saada.

"They have refused to transfer weapons as well as military equipment or free those kidnapped from Saudi Arabia and Yemen," the commission said.

Yemen and the Believing Youth have agreed to the establishment of four panels to implement the ceasefire. The committees were said to be working in Saada, Harf Sufian, Malahaid and the Yemeni-Saudi border.

"The mediation committees are now waiting for the local authority officials to take over the districts, which were under the rebellion, and then can understand the credibility of Al Houthi," Mohammed Al Hawri, a chairman of one of the panels, said.
