Security sources said saboteurs, using grenades, blew up a liquified natural gas pipeline in Yemen's southeastern province of Maarib on Sept. 13.

The sources said the attackers were believed to have been sent by Al Qaida in an effort to block Yemen's growing energy sector.

The LNG pipeline that reaches the Belhaf port in eastern Yemen was said to have been damaged. Other reports, however, said the explosions caused no significant damage.

In 2010, Yemen began exporting LNG through the pipeline, with a capacity of 6.7 million tons per year.

Yemen has been exporting LNG to South Korea and the United States. With the help of Western contractors, Sanaa has been assembling a second LNG production train in the southern province of Shabwa.
