The PA chairman said he was merely being treated for bruises that stemmed from a fall in the
bathroom during a trip to Tunisia in March 2010.
"In principle, the talk about illness is appropriate," Abbas said.
"However, there is no illness."
The PA chairman admitted that his office did not explain his frequent
visits to Amman. He said his physicians have discouraged his travel abroad,
which in May included trips to China, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the
United Arab Emirates.
"I am ill, I suffer from back pains, and my health condition does not
allow me to travel," Abbas said. "All these are necessary visits."
In a May 9 interview with the London-based A-Sharq Al Awsat, Abbas
discussed reports that he has been undergoing secret treatment in Jordan
throughout 2010. The reports said the PA chairman was weak and required
regular treatment for a series of unidentified ailments.
"I have been receiving treatment for some time in Jordan because of a
slip in the bathroom during my visit to Tunisia, which caused some bruises
in my back," Abbas said. "These bruises need six weeks of medical
observation and rest."
"My long stay in Jordan gave rise to interpretations and talk about
illnesses that have no foundation," Abbas said.
