Officials said Iran has completed the final stage of a $1.2 billion pipeline from Turkmenistan. They said the 1,059-kilometer pipeline would transport up to 20 million cubic meters of Turkmen gas per day to Iran.

On Nov. 28, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Turkmen counterpart Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov attended a ceremony at Sarakhs, Iran to inaugurate the 48-inch diameter pipeline.

Officials said the facility would prevent gas shortages in Iran amid United Nations and Western sanctions.

Teheran has long imported gas from neighboring Turkmenistan for residents of northeastern Iran. Officials cited a weak distribution system for the failure to provide gas to all citizens.
