Officials said the UAE Energy Ministry has been accelerating a project to build a pipeline that would transport 1.5 million barrels of crude oil per day while bypassing Iran, Middle East Newsline reported.

They said the $3.3 billion project was meant to reduce or end the need for oil to be shipped by tankers through the Iranian-dominated Strait of Hormuz.

"The project will be completed within a few months," a senior official said.

UAE Energy Minister Mohammed Al Hameli said the pipeline, which would reach the southern port of Fujairah, could be completed by 2011. He said from Fujairah, tankers would transport UAE oil to the Indian Ocean.
