The government has approved a $500 million plan to develop alternative fuel for transportation, Middle East Newsline reported.

Officials said Israeli startups would be encouraged to develop a replacement for gasoline for automobiles, buses and trucks amid the prospect of another global energy crisis.

"I view this as a national goal of the highest importance because the addiction to oil has led to the Western world being dependent on the oil-producing countries and harms the standing and security of the state of Israel," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sept. 19.

In an address to the Cabinet, Netanyahu said the search for an alternative to oil could take up to a decade. He said the government, rather than private contractors, would lead the research effort, the planning of which has not yet been completed.
