Officials said Baghdad and Damascus were discussing the construction of
three crude oil and natural gas pipelines, with a capacity of 2.5 million
barrels of oil per day.
They said Syria sought to become an energy hub in
the Mediterranean, with links to Europe and the rest of the Middle East.

In 2010, Iraq and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding to lay two
oil and one gas pipelines. Officials said the facilities would bring Iraqi
energy from the northern city of Kirkuk and reach the Syrian port of Banias
along the Mediterranean.
Officials said the new pipelines would expand Iraq's market in Europe.
They said Iraq has been limited by the aging pipeline from Kirkuk to the
Turkish port of Ceyhan, with a capacity of 1.65 million barrels per day and
the target of frequent insurgency attacks.
