On Aug. 17, the Lebanese parliament approved legislation that would pave
the way for exploration of energy reserves in the eastern Mediterranean.
Officials said the new law would allow the Hizbullah-dominated government of
Prime Minister Said Hariri to challenge Israel's exploration activities.

"The law organizes the process of surveying, exploration and production
of energy," parliamentarian Ali Hassan said.
The Hariri government has threatened to stop Israeli exploration and
development of natural gas reserves in what Lebanon claimed was its
territorial waters. A U.S.-Isralei consortium has determined that the areas
under exploration could contain up to 16 trillion cubic feet of gas.
