Officials acknowledged that 60 percent of skilled workers in Iran's energy industry have fled the country.

They said the brain drain stemmed from the desire by skilled Iranians to acquire jobs in Asia, North Africa and Europe, Middle East Newsline reported.

"Unfortunately, the outpouring of the cream of the crop and experts with high academic credentials in oil companies is very high," Iranian parliament's Energy Committee spokesman Emad Hosseini said.

In a June 13 interview, Hosseini called on the government to lift restrictions on salaries in the state-owned energy industry. He said foreign energy companies in Iran pay 10-fold that of government firms.
