Iranian Oil Minister Massoud Mirkazemi ordered the suspension of negotiations with Royal Dutch Shell and Spain's Repsol.

Both energy companies had been discussing a deal to develop the giant South Pars natural gas project.

In May, officials said, Repsol and Shell were given an ultimatum to formally agree to develop phases 13 and 14 of South Pars, regarded as the largest gas field in the world. But they said the two European companies, fearful of U.S. sanctions, refused to issue a commitment.

Iran's official Mehr News Agency said the Oil Ministry would select a company linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to develop South Pars.
