South Korean firms to help UAE to nearly double its oil refining capacity

ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates has undertaken an agreement to expand its refinery capacity.   

The UAE's state-owned Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Co. has signed contracts with four South Korean companies to expand oil refining capacity at a major facility.

Under the contracts, reported to total $9.6 billion, Abu Dhabi Oil Refining, known as Takreer, would expand the capacity of its Ruwais refinery by 2014, Middle East Newsline reported.

The South Korean firms were identified as SK Engineering and Construction, GS Engineering and Construction, Samsung Engineering and Daewoo Engineering and Construction.

Officials said the work would include crude oil distillation, refining units, pipes and utilities.

Abu Dhabi Oil Refining operates refineries at Abu Dhabi and Ruwais, with a combined capacity of 490,000 barrels per day.

The project was meant to increase capacity at Ruwais by 417,000 barrels per day.
