Iran fails to reduce gasoline consumption as threat of sanctions looms
NICOSIA — Iran has failed to reduce fuel consumption in the wake of a
reduction in subsidized gasoline.
A senior Iranian official said domestic consumption of fuel has not
declined since the Teheran regime slashed rations of subsidized gasoline.
In December 2009, Iran reduced the monthly amount of subsidized gasoline from
100 to 80 liters per vehicle.

"To meet the shortage, we need to import 22 million liters per day of
gasoline and nine million liters of gas oil per day," Iran's state-owned
National Distribution Oil Products Co. chief Farid Ameri said.
Ameri's remarks, reported by the Iranian Oil Ministry, were said to
highlight Teheran's vulnerability to a Western effort to slash fuel exports
to Iran.
Parliament has already approved legislation that would phase out
subsidies in an effort to reduce gasoline consumption.
