The United States has been a major military ally of Jordan. Officials said Washington and other NATO allies were using facilities in the Hashemite kingdom for desert and counter-insurgency training.

"During the meeting, discussions covered bilateral ties, particlarly in the military field," Jordan's official news agency, Petra, said.

On June 8, Jordanian leaders met an Italian military delegation. Jordan's Prince Faisal, the military adviser to Abdullah, held talks with Italian Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Giuseppe Valotto.

"They reviewed means to boost Jordanian-Italian military cooperation," a Jordanian government statement said.
