Petraeus, King Abdullah discuss Jordan's role in training NATO forces for Afghanistan
AMMAN — Jordan's King Abdullah and Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Masha'al Al Zaben met U.S. Central Command chief Gen. David
Petraeus in Amman on June 7 to discuss military cooperation "at all levels."
"More and more NATO members want to train in Jordan, particularly those
planning to deploy in Afghanistan," an official said.
Officials said Jordanian leaders have been meeting with both NATO
headquarters as well as individual members on defense and military
cooperation. They said the discussions have included the prospect of joint
exercises, training and defense management courses.

The United States has been a major military ally of Jordan. Officials
said Washington and other NATO allies were using facilities in the Hashemite
kingdom for desert and counter-insurgency training.
"During the meeting, discussions covered bilateral ties, particlarly in
the military field," Jordan's official news agency, Petra, said.
On June 8, Jordanian leaders met an Italian military delegation.
Jordan's Prince Faisal, the military adviser to Abdullah, held talks with
Italian Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Giuseppe Valotto.
"They reviewed means to boost Jordanian-Italian military cooperation," a
Jordanian government statement said.
