Hamas's military wing said Israeli special operation forces killed two leading operatives in the West Bank. The two Hamas casualties on Oct. 8 were identified as Nashat Al Karmi and Mamoun Al Natsheh, the former deemed the Islamic movement's commander for the southern West Bank.

Both Al Karmi and Al Natsheh were linked to the Hamas attack on an Israeli vehicle on Aug. 31 in which four Jews were killed.

"The Izzedin Kassam has deployed its best men on the battleground of death to defend their people from enemy attack," Hamas's military wing said.

The two Hamas operatives were killed in a battle with Israeli special operations forces in Hebron. Al Karmi, 34, and Al Natsheh, 25, had been residents of Tulkarm.

"The Zionist forces besieged the two Al Kassam leaders inside a house in the Hebron neighborhood of Abu Sneineh and clashed with them for several hours before destroying parts of the house on the bodies of the holy warriors who resisted until their last drop of blood," Hamas said.

"We hold the Zionist occupation and the [Palestinian] Authority of Fatah with full responsibility for this heinous crime because the martyrs were chased by both," Hamas said.

Al Karmi and Al Natsheh had engaged the Israeli Army unit in a shootout. A military statement said both Hamas operatives were involved in the killing of the four Israeli civilians in August.

"During the operation, the wanted terror suspects opened fire at the Israel Defense Forces, which then returned fire and identified hitting one of the suspects," the military said.

The Israeli statement described Al Karmi as one of the commanders of the Hamas military wing in Hebron. Al Natsheh was identified as a Hamas operative who had been arrested in 2008.

The military said Hamas has re-established its military wing in Hebron. The statement said Hamas has been planning several additional attacks against Israel.
