The Luftwaffe has sent officers to Israel for training on unmanned
aerial vehicles. German fighter-jet pilots underwent instruction at the
Israel Air Force base at Ein Shemer to operate the Heron UAV, Middle East Newsline reported.
"The Germans plan on bringing the Herons to Afghanistan by 2011," a
defense source said.

In 2009, the Luftwaffe ordered fewer than 10 Heron medium-altitude,
long-endurance UAVs from the state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries. IAI,
banned along with other Israelis from Afghanistan, awarded a maintenance
subcontract to Germany's Rheinmetall Defence.
Heron, priced at about $10 million, has become a leading UAV in the NATO
war in Afghanistan. Australia, Canada and France have been deploying Heron
variants for reconnaissance missions.
At Ein Shemer, IAI directed a 25-day training course for German pilots.
The course included classroom instruction, simulators and finally Heron
operations.
