The U.S. consulate in Jerusalem said Americans could be trapped in violent demonstrations in Israel and the West Bank, Middle East Newsline reported.

The consulate said tensions have risen in the area in wake of the Israeli naval interception of a Turkish-sponsored flotilla to the Gaza Strip, in which nine passengers were killed.

"American citizens should especially use caution in places with large Arab populations, including Umm Al Fahm, Akko, Jaffa, Haifa, East Jerusalem and Jerusalem's Old City," the consultate said in a warden message on May 31. "Demonstrations are likely in various West Bank cities as well as in Gaza."

The consulate as well as the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv said Americans could be caught in road blockages, demonstrations and protests. The statement said Israeli police were on high alert, particularly in Arab-populated areas.

"The Israeli Department of Transportation is restricting traffic and access in the Wadi Ara and Temple Mount/Haram Al-Sharif areas," the statement said.

The consulate said it has not received reports of serious injuries or fatalities among Americans in the Gaza-bound flotilla.
