The U.S. military said it plans to withdraw from a post outside the
Iranian opposition settlement called Camp Ashraf.
The military said the withdrawal from the post, called Camp Grizzly, would not affect the presence
of the Mujahadeen Khalq, which has been in Iraq for more than 20 years, Middle East Newsline reported.
"United States Forces-Iraq has absolutely no control over Camp Ashraf,"
U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Bob Owen said. "Camp Ashraf is in the
complete hands of the government of Iraq. Camp Ashraf is not closing on
July 1st."
Owen said the closing of Camp Grizzly was part of the drawdown of U.S.
forces in Iraq. He said all camps and forward operating bases would be
closed by late 2011.
Iraq has pledged to close Camp Ashraf, with more than 3,000 Mujhadeen
members and their families. Teheran has demanded the closure of Ashraf and
the extradition of Mujahadeen members to Iran.
