BAGHDAD — For the first time in nearly two years, a major Iraqi city
has been the target of rocket attacks.
The second largest city in Iraq, Basra, has come under several rocket
strikes from alleged Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias.
Iraqi sources said Basra has come under increasing tension amid a power
struggle between militias and organized crime.

The city has been the center of the huge Iraqi crude oil sector in the south.
The attacks took place in late February and no suspects were reported to have been captured.
"These attacks appear related to a feud between criminal gangs," an
Iraqi source said.
The rocket strikes were reported on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23, and no injuries
were reported. The rockets landed near the University of Basra and the
city's central reservoir.
"Evidence was gathered at the scene and results of the investigation are
pending," the U.S. military said.
