An Iranian newspaper overseen by the government reported an attack by the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan near the northwestern city of Orumieh, Middle East Newsline reported. On Aug. 14, the Shargh daily said a commander in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed in the Kurdish ambush in West Azarbaijan province.

Iran has accused Britain and the United States of financing and training Kurdish rebels near the border with Iraq. PJAK was said to operate in and near the Kurdish autonomous region of northern Iraq.

Shargh said the attack by PJAK, linked to the Kurdish Workers Party, took place on Aug. 13. The IRGC commander was identified as Nasser Pasandideh, killed along with two officers from the Basij militia.

The clash took place amid an Iranian offensive against PJAK along the Iranian borders with Iraq and Turkey. Kurdish sources said IRGC units have been infiltrating the autonomous Kurdistan region of northern Iraq.
