Officials said Iran and Russia have completed scores of tests to determine operations and safety procedures at the nuclear energy reactor at Bushehr. They said the final tests took place over a six-month period that ended in August 2010.

Iran has been reporting the imminent launch of Bushehr for about two years. The project, headed by Russia's state-owned Atomstroyexport, has been delayed by about a decade by technical and political obstacles.

"Through the endless efforts of the country's scientists and experts we are on the verge of operating Bushehr nuclear power plant," Bushehr Gov. Mohammed Jahanbakhsh said.

A senior Bushehr official said the $1 billion nuclear facility has completed such examination as bar pressure, load pressure and stress tests. They also cited the so-called warm test in which all of the components of Bushehr were demonstrated.

"The inspection began on Jan. 20, during which all systems and equipment were successfully demonstrated," Mahmoud Jafari, responsible for Bushehr development, said.

Officials said Iran plans to launch operations of Bushehr by September 2010. They said the prime contractor, Russia's Atomstroyexport, would remain in Bushehr for at least the next 18 months to ensure operations and complete training.
