Hamas sources said the Islamic regime has begun preparing infrastructure for an airport that could accommodate light aircraft and helicopters.

They said the airport, located in the southern Gaza Strip, would be completed in mid-2011, Middle East Newsline reported.

"We desperately need such a facility," a Hamas source said.

The sources said the airport would handle humanitarian and other cargo as well as light passenger jets. They said Hamas has been coordinating with Lebanon and Syria regarding air passages.

The Gaza Strip contained an airport until its destruction by the Israel Air Force in the insurgency war with the Palestinian Authority in 2000. The airport was never rebuilt because of Israel's veto and lack of foreign aid.
