In his statement on Sept. 14, Jabari pledged to use all the tools in
Hamas's arsenal, Middle East Newsline reported. He cited missiles, tunnels and fighters.
For most of the last two years, Jabari, rumored to have been killed in
the Hamas war, was not seen in public in fear of an Israeli assassination.
In 2009, under Egyptian pressure, Israel allowed Jabari to attend
reconciliation talks with Fatah in Cairo.
In a photograph released by Hamas, Jabari was seen with a trimmed beard
and green Hamas cap.
"The only language the enemy understands is power," Jabari said.
In a letter to Hamas's military, Jabari pledged to continue the war
against Israel "until victory or martyrdom." He said the military was
committed to destroying Israel, "liberating Palestine from the sea to the
river and its capital will be Jerusalem."
Jabari, in charge of Hamas's military buildup, also expressed his
opposition to Palestinian Authority negotiations with Israel. He said the
only way to deal with Israel is through "fire and resistance."
The statement by Hamas's military chief was released amid an escalation
of missile and rocket attacks against Israel from the Gaza Strip. Hamas has
called for increased strikes on Israel as well as in the West Bank.
