On June 28, a UN camp in the central Gaza Strip town of Zawayda was
raided by about 25 masked gunmen and vandalized, The UN said the gunmen
bound UN four guards, then torched equipment and destroyed the swimming
pool.
This marked the second Islamist attack on UN camps in about a month.
UNRWA has established 1,200 camps for 250,000 youngsters in the Gaza Strip.
"Time is against us," Ging said. "We are losing an entire generation."
The Hamas regime condemned the Islamist campaign against the UN. The
Interior Ministry suggested that the attacks were the work of Al
Qaida-aligned militias.
"These are groups led by those with misguided ideas who want to distort
the situation in Gaza," the Interior Ministry said.
In May, more than 30 gunmen raided and vandalized a UN summer camp. The
gunmen left a note threatening to kill Ging. Nobody was reported arrested.
Over the last few weeks, a Hamas legislator accused the UN of corrupting
Gaza youngsters. He cited the mixing of the sexes in camp activities.
Palestinian sources did not rule out that elements close to Hamas were
linked to the attacks on the UN camps. They pointed out that the Hamas
regime was running its own Islamist camp network, with a reported enrollment
of 100,000.
"Many parents prefer to have their kids swim and play football rather
than be stuck in lessons on jihad," a Palestinian source said.
